Punjab Kings: A Tale of Struggles, Peaks, and Renewed Aspirations in the IPL Journey

Punjab Kings, previously known as Kings XI Punjab, embarked on their IPL journey with a purchase price of Rs 304 crore (about US$76 million) in 2008, backed by the ownership quartet of Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul. Their acquisition stood between the valuations of Rajasthan Royals and Kolkata Knight Riders. Although the franchise rebranded in 2021, their solitary appearance in the final reflects a journey marked by challenges.

Historical Milestones:
Punjab Kings had a promising inaugural season but struggled to establish a stable core, facing a setback when expelled from the league in 2010 alongside Rajasthan Royals. Legal battles ensued, impacting their 2011 auction plans. Under coach Michael Bevan, appointed just days before the auction, Punjab refrained from retaining any players.

Fluctuating Fortunes:
After a middling period, Punjab Kings found a golden moment in the 2014 auction, assembling a competitive squad under coach Sanjay Bangar. Topping the league stage, they narrowly lost the final to Kolkata Knight Riders, setting high expectations. However, sustaining those gains became a challenge in subsequent seasons.

Transition in the 2020s:
Entering the 2020s as a batting-heavy side, Punjab remained on the fringes of success. The leadership changed in 2022 with Mayank Agarwal, but the desired turnaround didn’t materialize. In 2023, Shikhar Dhawan took over the captaincy, signaling a renewed quest for success.
