Anrich Nortje, a genuine speedster, hails from Uitenhage, a town north of Port Elizabeth in South Africa. Often lauded as “extremely exciting” by legendary pacer Dale Steyn, Nortje possesses the ability to consistently breach the 150kph mark and delivers a fearsome bouncer.
Raised in the town of Uitenhage, known for the largest Volkswagen factory in Africa, Nortje’s cricketing journey began at Brandwag High. He later pursued a Bachelor of Commerce degree in financial planning at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, using varsity cricket to refine his skills. His entry into franchise cricket was marked by a strong start, claiming 20 wickets in four matches during the 2016-17 season.
Nortje gained prominence in T20 cricket during the inaugural edition of the Mzansi Super League in late 2018. Representing Cape Town Blitz, he made a spectacular impact with his express pace, capturing eight wickets in three matches. Despite an unfortunate ankle injury cutting short his tournament, Nortje recovered in time for his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in March 2019, where he showcased his wicket-taking abilities.
Injuries momentarily disrupted his T20 career, forcing him to withdraw from the 2019 IPL after being contracted by Kolkata Knight Riders. However, Nortje’s resilience earned him a spot in South Africa’s 2019 World Cup squad, although he faced another setback with a thumb injury ahead of the tournament.
